March 2020 Events Womens History MonthMarch 6, 2020 Women's History Mont

On March 6, 2020, the International Institute will host its annual International Women’s Day celebration, during Women’s History Month. The event is to honor the achievements of women leaders. International Women’s Day is a global phenomenon, and we celebrate in a festive, supportive atmosphere that honors immigrant women and daughters of immigrants who have made a profound difference in New England and the world.

The event highlights the impact refugee and immigrant women have on our economy and our communities, and it celebrates the achievements of women everywhere. The speaking program features a conversation with the honorees about their life experiences.

International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed around the world since the early 1900s. It is a collective day of global celebration and a call for gender parity. The International Institute of New England has been celebrating IWD since the early 2000s as a way to showcase immigrant women and their advocates. Past honorees include: Rep. Nikki Tsongas, Victoria Reggie Kennedy, Ambassador Swanee Hunt, Dr. Charlotte Yeh, Colette Phillips, Christina Qi, Pardis Sabeti, and U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen.

Blanche Ames Ames

Borderland, The Life and Times of Blanche Ames Ames

Blanche Ames Ames (1878-1969) was an artist, an activist, a builder, an inventor, a birth control maverick, and a leader of the woman suffrage movement in Massachusetts. She was a society woman who was not afraid to shock polite society. Her name doesn't appear in most American history books. This, too, is part of her story.

"Borderland: The Life & Times of Blanche Ames Ames" is a feature-length documentary that chronicles the life of a woman who was born in the 19th century, worked to change the 20th century, and whose wisdom still resonates in the 21st century.

Please join us for the following free screenings:

"A Vote of Her Own" screening in Mansfield on March 22, 2020, from 2-4 PM.
