How to Focus on Your Most Ambitious Goal
Let’s be honest…Do you have a love hate relationship with goal setting? You love the idea of setting goals and have set plenty of them in the past BUT…the thought of setting new goals that you might not achieve is secretly making you dread even doing this exercise again!
Setting goals is like being on a rollercoaster! You start at the gate filled with anticipation of what is to come! You get in the cart and buckle up with butterflies in your tummy! And then your off! Barreling up, down, and around all the curves until you arrive at the launchpad! You know the part of the ride where they are towing you upwards toward the top and you know that death defying launch is coming! And as you crest the top, you think to yourself holy crap, am I going to make it!
But unlike a rollercoaster where you always end up safely at the end of the ride, that is not life! Sometimes you are going through all those feelings, do all that work, and then crash at the end! If this sounds likes your last goal setting experience, keep reading because I am sharing my tips for guaranteed success!
Most people love to set goals, and I am one of them but when you set a goal, do the work, and don’t achieve it, it can really kill your mojo! So, I learned some tricks in goal setting that will help you as a busy woman in business achieve success more often!
First you must be honest with yourself and make a decision about goal setting. What is more important to you: a) pushing yourself so far out of your box that you might not achieve the goal or b) feeling a sense of accomplishment when the goal is achieved. This decision is so HUGE for yourmindset! So, you must choose now! Please note, there is no right or wrong answer!
Second, ditch the whole SMART goal theory! If you are a goal setting guru, you probably just gave this article a thumbs down! But hear me out! I get that goals should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound but those boundaries don’t work for everyone and many women I have worked with NEVER actually set the goal because they can’t figure out how to make it a SMART goal. So, what’s more important, setting it perfectly or just getting it on paper?
Third, no matter what goal you are setting it has to align with your dream lifestyle Why? Because if you are not aligning your goals with what you truly want, then you will not be willing or motivated to do the work when the work gets tough! So, design your dream lifestyle, then set your goals.
Fourth, is to break the BIG goal into tiny achievable mini-goals along the journey! When you do this, you automatically get to celebrate each win along the way which keeps you excited along your journey! And the big goal does not seem so scary, when it’s broken down into baby steps!
Finally, make sure that each mini-goal is prioritized on your weekly schedule. If this big goal is going to happen, you must make the time to do the work. This step is critical to success! So, each Sunday when you are planning your week, focus on the next mini-goal, when its due and schedule timeto work on it.
PS Don’t forget to plan time for celebrating your accomplishment too!
And just like that you shifted your mindset of what kind of a goal you wanted to set, you made sure to set one that aligned with your dreams, and you broke down each step and made the time to work on it! Yes, it’s that simple!
